Deez Nuts (and Seeds)

A cosy little library for seeds & nutty bits. Use these as boosters inside a balanced dry mix (they’re tasty, so we keep portions sensible).

Tap an item to expand. Includes a rough “per kg of mix” inclusion guide.

🌰 Seeds & Nuts
Rough mix-planning guide (per 1kg dry mix):
Think “sprinkle, not main course”. Seeds are energy-dense and very more-ish — so amounts below are intentionally conservative. If your overall mix already contains a lot of oily/fatty ingredients, aim for the lower end.
White Millet Small, crunchy seeds • great for scatter feeding & foraging texture
🌾 Seed

How to use

White millet is a tidy little seed that adds foraging fun and variety to the bowl. It’s typically used as a light scatter component rather than a major ingredient.

Per-kg inclusion guide

Everyday rangesafe “background” level for most mixes
10–30g / kg
Foraging-heavy mixesif you’re using lots of scatter feeding
30–50g / kg
Tip: Millet is brilliant for enrichment — sprinkle into bedding/trays so they have to “hunt” for it.

Mix notes

  • Best for: adding crunch + encouraging natural foraging behaviour
  • Pair with: plainer base + balanced staples so they don’t just pick the “fun bits”
Linseed Oily little seed • use as a tiny “condition booster”
🫘 Seed

How to use

Linseed is naturally oil-rich, so it’s best used as a micro-booster rather than a big chunk of the mix. A little goes a long way.

Per-kg inclusion guide

Everyday rangetiny “supporting ingredient”
5–15g / kg
Condition supportonly if overall mix isn’t already oily
15–25g / kg
Keep it balanced: if you increase linseed, consider reducing other oily seeds at the same time.

Mix notes

  • Best for: adding richness in a controlled way
  • Go lighter for: sedentary rats, already-rich mixes, or if weight gain is a concern
Striped Sunflower Seeds Super tasty • high reward seed • best used sparingly
🌻 Seed

How to use

Sunflower seeds are very popular and quite rich, so they’re best treated as a high-value ingredient (or training treat) rather than a major mix component.

Per-kg inclusion guide

Everyday rangekeeps it exciting, without overdoing it
5–20g / kg
Richer mixesif you also use hemp/linseed/nuts, stay low
0–10g / kg
Top tip: If selective feeding kicks off, reduce sunflower first — it’s usually the “picked first” culprit.

Mix notes

  • Best for: enrichment, training, and “little wins” in the mix
  • Go easy if: anyone is prone to weight gain or your mix is already energy-dense
Hemp Seed Nutty & rich • tiny powerhouse • keep portions modest
🌿 Seed

How to use

Hemp seed is another oilier, energy-dense option. It’s fantastic in small quantities to add variety and “nutty” interest — but it’s easy to overdo if you’re also using sunflower/linseed.

Per-kg inclusion guide

Everyday rangenice and modest
5–15g / kg
Active / lean groupsonly if the rest of the mix is fairly plain
15–25g / kg
Rule of thumb: If hemp goes up, sunflower/linseed usually comes down. Keep the “oily seed budget” steady.

Mix notes

  • Best for: adding richness in tiny amounts + keeping texture interesting
  • Go lighter for: already-rich mixes or less active rats

1kg mix cheat sheet (quick maths)

If you wanted a balanced “seed sprinkle” across these four, a simple starting point could be:

White millet25g
Linseed10g
Striped sunflower10g
Hemp seed10g
That’s 55g seeds per kg (5.5%). Increase/decrease based on how rich the rest of the mix is and how active your rats are.
