🐀 Premium Complete Mix

Why we made it this way

Mischief Made Complete Rat Mix is made for keepers who want a varied, premium-quality dry mix without cutting corners on ingredients. We use multiple base mixes rather than relying on just one, helping to create a more interesting bowl with a broader spread of ingredients, textures and flavours.

Rather than relying on a single protein ingredient, our animal-protein section combines Scottish salmon-based kibble, dried mealworms and pupae. These are joined by dehydrated fruits and vegetables, leafy forage, flowers, herbs and a five-seed blend to provide a diverse range of ingredients alongside grains and cereals.

The variety isn't only about nutrition. Different shapes, smells, textures and flavours can make the bowl more interesting, particularly when the mix is scatter-fed or incorporated into natural foraging activities.

🥕 9 fruit & veg inclusions 🐟 3 protein sources 🌱 5-seed blend 🌿 Leafy forage & herbs 🌸 Botanical flower blend 🌾 Diverse grains & cereals
Designed with balance in mind: this mix follows the general spirit of the Shunamite style, using distinct ingredient sections to provide variety while keeping the overall structure practical and consistent.

What goes into the bowl?

Variety is at the heart of the mix. Here's a closer look at the different sections and what they contribute.

🥣 Base Mixes

  • Mr Johnson's Special Rabbit Mix
  • Marriage's Pygmy Goat Mix
  • Mr Johnson's Supreme Rat & Mouse Mix

Using several base mixes rather than a single product increases the variety of grains, cereals, textures and individual ingredients found throughout the finished mix.

🌾 Grains & cereals

Grains and cereals form an important carbohydrate-rich part of the mix, providing energy alongside a variety of shapes and textures.

Processed grain ingredients

  • Pasta
  • Dried noodles
  • Low-sugar cereals
  • Barley rings
  • Whole maize
  • Other varied processed grain pieces
🌽 Whole Maize A whole cereal grain providing carbohydrate for energy alongside fibre and small amounts of protein. Yellow maize also naturally contains carotenoid pigments, while the large, firm kernels introduce another useful texture for gnawing and foraging.
🌾 Barley Rings A cereal-based ingredient contributing carbohydrate and grain-derived fibre while adding a larger, crunchy texture that helps make the mix more varied.

🐟 Three-source protein blend

Instead of relying on a single animal-protein ingredient, we combine three different sources, each bringing something slightly different to the bowl.

Scottish Salmon-Based Kibble A highly palatable source of animal protein and essential amino acids. Salmon-based foods also provide marine-derived fats, including omega-3 fatty acids, depending on the formulation of the kibble.
Dried Mealworms A nutrient-dense insect protein that contributes protein and fat while adding a very different texture and flavour. Their exoskeleton also contains chitin, a form of insoluble fibre.
Pupae Another insect-derived protein source with its own nutritional profile, contributing protein, fats and micronutrients while increasing the diversity of animal ingredients within the mix.
Why Three Sources? Combining fish and insect ingredients provides greater variety than relying on one protein source alone, while offering different tastes and textures throughout the bowl.

🥕 Fruit & vegetable blend

Our fruit and vegetables are dehydrated, allowing us to include a wide variety of colourful plant ingredients throughout the dry mix.

🍌 Banana Provides carbohydrate, potassium and fibre while adding a naturally sweet flavour and another texture to the mix.
🥕 Carrot Naturally rich in carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, which can be converted by the body into vitamin A as required.
🟣 Beetroot Provides fibre and naturally occurring plant compounds including the distinctive betalain pigments responsible for its deep colour.
🌱 Parsnip A root vegetable providing carbohydrate and fibre while adding another plant source with a different flavour and nutrient profile.
🥒 Courgette A light vegetable inclusion adding plant fibre, micronutrients and further variety to the vegetable portion of the mix.
🫑 Mixed Peppers Colourful peppers contribute carotenoids and other naturally occurring antioxidant plant compounds to the mix.
🍎 Diced Apple Adds natural fruit flavour alongside fibre, including pectin, and naturally occurring plant polyphenols.
🟢 Pea Flakes A nutritionally substantial legume ingredient providing carbohydrate, fibre and plant protein as well as a satisfying crunchy texture.
🎃 Pumpkin Provides fibre and naturally occurring carotenoid pigments, including beta-carotene.
🌿 Chicory Root — Naturally Rich in Prebiotic Fibre

Chicory root is naturally rich in inulin, a fermentable dietary fibre. Unlike ordinary digestible carbohydrate, inulin can pass through to the large intestine where it is used by members of the gut microbiota. This makes chicory a useful source of prebiotic fibre within a varied diet.

🌿 Leafy forage & herbs

A varied mix of leaves, stems and aromatic herbs introduces extra fibre, textures, scents and naturally occurring plant compounds.

Echinacea Leaves and stems provide plant fibre alongside naturally occurring phenolic compounds and add a different texture to the forage portion.
Parsley Stalk A fibrous leafy herb containing naturally occurring carotenoids and flavonoid plant compounds.
Raspberry Leaf A traditional leafy forage ingredient providing fibre and naturally occurring polyphenolic plant compounds.
Nettle Leaf Nutrient-rich leafy forage containing fibre, minerals, carotenoids and a range of naturally occurring plant compounds.
Dandelion Leaf Provides fibrous leafy material alongside carotenoids, minerals and further forage diversity.
Alfalfa Forage A substantial forage ingredient providing fibre, plant protein, carotenoids and naturally occurring minerals.
Spearmint An aromatic herb containing naturally occurring polyphenols while adding distinctive scent and flavour to encourage exploration of the mix.

🌸 Botanical flower blend

Flowers aren't included just because they make the bowl look good. Different flower species introduce their own pigments, aromas and naturally occurring phytochemicals while creating an even more varied foraging experience.

Marigold Flowers Naturally rich in colourful carotenoid pigments, including lutein-related compounds, while providing another distinct plant texture.
Hibiscus Flowers Their intense colour comes partly from naturally occurring anthocyanins and other polyphenolic plant compounds.
Rose Flowers Aromatic petals add scent and texture alongside naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds.
Red Cornflowers Colourful petals contribute natural plant pigments and flavonoids while increasing botanical diversity.
Cornflowers Provide additional floral variety, colour and naturally occurring flavonoid plant compounds.
Blue Mallow Flowers Naturally colourful flowers containing plant pigments and mucilaginous plant compounds, adding another distinctive texture to the forage blend.

🌱 Five-seed blend

Seeds are nutrient-dense, so they make up a smaller proportion of the overall mix, but they bring useful fats, plant protein, fibre and micronutrients. Using several different seeds also gives the mix a broader range of fatty acids, flavours, sizes and textures.

🌱 Linseed Particularly valued for its naturally high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Linseed also contributes fibre, plant protein and naturally occurring lignans.
🌿 Hemp Seed A nutrient-dense seed providing plant protein and unsaturated fats, including both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp also contributes minerals and vitamin E alongside its distinctive nutty flavour.
🔴 Red Millet A small whole grain seed providing carbohydrate, fibre and plant protein alongside naturally occurring minerals. Its tiny size also makes it particularly well suited to scatter feeding and encourages natural searching behaviour.
⚪ White Millet Another small cereal seed contributing carbohydrate, fibre and plant protein. Combining different millet varieties increases grain diversity and adds lots of small pieces for rats to forage for.
🌻 Sunflower Seeds Nutrient-dense seeds providing unsaturated fats, plant protein and vitamin E, along with minerals such as magnesium. Their higher fat content is one reason seeds are used as a carefully controlled portion of the complete mix rather than forming its main base.
Why a Mixed Seed Section? No single seed has exactly the same nutritional profile. Combining linseed, hemp, red millet, white millet and sunflower provides a wider range of fatty acids, plant nutrients and textures while keeping this energy-dense section appropriately proportioned within the overall mix.
🌱 A little goes a long way

Seeds are among the most energy-dense ingredients in the bowl, particularly linseed, hemp and sunflower. That's why they form just 5% of the overall mix. This allows rats to benefit from their useful fats, plant proteins and micronutrients without turning the diet into an overly seed-heavy mix.

More than just a long ingredient list

  • Plant diversity: fruit, roots, legumes, cereals, seeds, leafy forage, herbs and flowers provide numerous different botanical ingredients rather than relying on one or two token additions.
  • Different types of fibre: the mix contains fibre from grains, vegetables, forage, seeds and specialist ingredients such as chicory root.
  • Three protein sources: salmon-based kibble, mealworms and pupae provide a more varied animal-protein section.
  • Useful fats: linseed, hemp and sunflower contribute different unsaturated fatty acids, including plant-based omega-3 from linseed.
  • Naturally occurring plant compounds: colourful vegetables, herbs, flowers and seeds contribute carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols and other phytochemicals.
  • Foraging enrichment: different shapes, sizes, scents, textures and flavours make the mix well suited to scatter feeding and enrichment-based feeding.
  • Variety without unnecessary extras: our dehydrated plant additions are selected for what they naturally bring to the bowl rather than artificial colour or flavour.
A note on botanicals: herbs and flowers are included as nutritious, interesting components of a varied diet rather than as medicines. We don't make claims that individual botanical ingredients prevent, treat or cure health conditions.
Please note: ingredients may vary from batch to batch depending on availability, but the overall Shunamite-inspired balance and section ratios will remain the guiding structure. We always aim to use quality ingredients with plenty of variety to keep bowls interesting and little ones happy.
